Browns cut Vicksburg’s Stamps

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Browns got one of their biggest stars back Tuesday, which was bad news for A.J. Stamps.

Stamps, a former Vicksburg High standout, was waived by the Browns to make room for wide receiver Josh Gordon on the 90-man roster. Gordon was reinstated by the NFL on Tuesday after he was suspended for all of the 2015 season for multiple drug violations.

Stamps signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent in May. A 6-foot, 205-pound safety, Stamps played the past two seasons at Kentucky and had 67 tackles in 2015. He’ll become a free agent again if he is unclaimed off of waivers.

Prior to playing at Kentucky, Stamps helped East Mississippi Community College win the 2013 NJCAA national title.

Gordon had a breakout season in 2013, when he led the league with 1,646 receiving yards, scored nine touchdowns and averaged 117.6 yards per game. However, he has missed 27 of 32 games since and his off-the-field shortcomings have threatened to end a promising career.

Gordon will be suspended for the first four games of this season, and is eligible to return Oct. 3. He’s allowed to join the team in its upcoming training camp and can participate in meetings and conditioning work.

Gordon expressed gratitude for his latest fresh start in a message on Twitter.

“I’m blessed and grateful to be granted this opportunity,” he wrote. “I can’t wait to get back out there and play the game I love in front of the great fans of Cleveland.
