Delinquent tax list published

You can’t escape taxes, and this is the time of year where if you tried, Warren County is working on a list with your name on it.

More than $1.5 million in outstanding property tax has yet to be collected, according to Warren County Tax Collector Antonia Flaggs-Jones. More than 2,000 properties account for money still owed to the county, she added.

“That won’t be the total number that goes to the sale, though,” she said.

In addition to those who may pay their taxes before the auction, Flaggs-Jones said, “If the property has already been purchased by the state, then we don’t re-sell it, (which decreases the number).”

The properties listed as delinquent with the Warren County Tax Collector’s office for the 2015 tax year are listed inside today’s edition of The Post.

The tax collector is required by law to annually advertise and sell property at a tax sale on the last Monday in August for unpaid taxes.

The tax assessor is required to annually assess properties within the county and to present assessment rolls to the board of supervisors for adoption. Once those rolls are adopted, they are turned over to the tax collector to collect. Taxpayers can begin to pay taxes for the given year in December of that year. There is no interest charged if the taxes are paid by Jan. 31 of the next year. After Jan. 31, a 1 percent charge is added to the taxes per month until the tax sale in August.

As a result of this law, the Warren County tax collector will have a land sale on Aug. 29 at 8:30 a.m. at the Warren County Court House for delinquent taxes for the year 2015.
