It was a good week for the St. Aloysius football team and the Vicksburg Country Club golf team. Both had positive outcomes with wins during the SAHS and Porters Chapel Academy football jamboree and the annual Warren County Cup, respectively.

On Friday, St. Al blasted Porters Chapel 43-0 in a two-quarter preseason jamboree.

“I liked the intensity and excitement. I think everybody played real hard. Just the stuff that’s hard to get out of them when it’s 110 degrees in practice,” St. Al coach BJ Smithhart said.

St. Al scored touchdowns on six of its seven offensive possessions. St. Al quarterback Brandon Teller accounted for six touchdowns and 270 total yards. Wide receiver Tyler Lewis caught two touchdown passes.

On Sunday, for the first time since 2008, the VCC squad won the Warren County Cup by earning 17 of a possible 21 points in the alternate shot and match play rounds.

VCC, which only needed to earn 3 ½ of a possible 14 points Sunday to win the Cup, won eight of 14 matches and halved four more to take a 21-7 victory in the two-day, Ryder Cup style event pitting Warren County’s two golf clubs.

More positive news reported in Vicksburg this week:

• A group of children from Vicksburg Family Development and The Village Learning Depot contributed to the Vicksburg Community Garden by making a bright green multi-humped dragon for the garden, which is located on U.S. Highway 61. The children worked on the dragon from the end of June until two weeks before school under the direction of counselor Maurice Taylor with the United Way’s Vicksburg Family Development. The dragon was made from donated tires and paint with support spanning across Vicksburg, Karen Frederick with the Vicksburg Community Garden, said.

“It has not just been one person, one organization, the community has really come together for the green dragon project,” Frederick said. “Kids, when they come to the garden, it’s fascinating for them to see it but to take part in it adds (to the experience).”

• Kami May became the United Way of West Central Mississippi’s new director of marketing and community relations.

May is charged with designing and printing all promotional materials, including flyers, press releases and posters for the organization.
