Niners sign Price to practice squad

Published 7:46 pm Sunday, September 4, 2016

A day after he was released by the San Francisco 49ers, Norman Price got a new lease on life with the team.

Price was one of nine players the 49ers signed to their practice squad on Sunday. The former Vicksburg High and Southern Miss offensive lineman will not be on the active 53-man roster, but will practice with the team throughout the week.

Practice-squad players can be promoted to the 53-man roster, or signed by another team, at any point during the season.

Price signed with the 49ers in May as an undrafted rookie free agent. He played in all four preseason games, but was let go Saturday when NFL teams made their final cuts to get down to the opening day roster limit.

Among the other players the 49ers brought back Sunday was former Ole Miss offensive lineman Fahn Cooper.

Under NFL rules, each team can keep up to 10 players with two or less years of NFL experience on the practice squad. Terms of Price’s contract were not available, but practice squad players must be paid at least $6,900 per week for the 2016 season. If a player is on a team’s practice squad for the entire regular season, that amounts to $117,300 for the year. The minimum salary for a rookie on the 53-man roster is $450,000.
