The first weekend in October will see people hitting the streets in Vicksburg either on foot or on wheels as the city plays host to three annual events in the downtown area with the Old Court House Flea Market, Downtown Vicksburg’s Bricks and Spokes and the opening of the fall Vicksburg Farmers Market taking place Oct. 1.

The 34th annual flea market will occupy Cherry, Jackson, Monroe and Grove streets around the Old Court House Museum, featuring a variety of arts, crafts and food items for visitors from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Most of the food booths are full,” said Old Courthouse Museum director/curator Bubba Bolm. “We may have space for one or two more food booths.”

The food booths go for $70 for a 20-by-20 space. Craft booths are 10-by-10 spaces and rent for $60. Bolm said people can apply for space for a crafts booths up to the day of the flea market.

“This is always a big event,” Bolm said. “We usually get about 5,000 people coming through the market.”

While the flea market gets underway, cyclists will be lining up to ride the streets and roads of Vicksburg and Warren County in the seventh annual Bricks and Spokes bicycle ride. The event begins at the Vicksburg Senior Center on South Street and takes riders across the Mississippi River into Louisiana across the Old Highway 80 bridge and back, before breaking off into routes of 10, 30, 50 and 62 miles through the city and county.

The ride is open to all ages and bicycles. Entry fee is $40 and riders can register up to the start of the race. For information on the ride or to register, call Vicksburg Main Street at 601-634-4527. More than 200 cyclists participated in the 2015 Bricks and Spokes, and 34 have already registered for this year’s ride, according to the Downtown Vicksburg website.

The annual fall Vicksburg Farmers Market opens for its season at 9 a.m. at the corner of Washington and Jackson streets, offering a selection of fresh homegrown vegetables, baked goods and other items. The market will be open from 9 a.m. to noon every Saturday until Nov. 26.
