The royal court invites all of Vicksburg to attend a dinner theater of proper Renaissance proportions.

The choral department of Vicksburg High School is hosting this year’s Singe Feaste: A Renaissance Madrigal Dinner. The show is entitled “Eine Kleine Knight-Schtick,” and consists of dinner, a play and a choral performance.

The show begins at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 and 19 in the Southern Cultural Heritage Center auditorium, 1302 Adams St.

“It’s a perfect night out,” director Angela Chapin said.

The Christmas-themed show will be filled with Renaissancestyle music — 21 total songs from start to finish.

“There are certain songs that are basically Singe Feaste staples, you do them with every Singe Feaste,” Chapin said of about six of the songs that will be performed.

The madrigal choir of ninth through 12th grade students will make the royal court of a king, queen and jester. The court will put on the comedic musical play as guests dine.

“There is a skit that happens. The skit is the entertainment for the royal court similar to medieval times,” Chapin said.

The show follows the story of a court jester whose family thinks he is competing in a tournament as a knight, and a king who has promised his daughter to the tournament winner even though she is in love with someone else.

“There’s always just funny little puns and slapstick humor — things that all ages will appreciate,” assistant director Christie Beasley said.

Up to 150 people can be seated each night for the two-hour performance, and the audience is encouraged to wear their finest renaissance attire.

The menu will consist of a hot mulled cider, salad, chicken cordon bleu, green beans, potatoes au gratin and a dessert provided by Palmertree Catering.

This year the high school men’s and women’s choirs will be singing servers and will perform in the choral concert of traditional carols mixed with not as familiar tunes to end the night.

“We try to make sure its something people will recognize. At least some of the pieces so if you’re not a music fanatic that keeps you interested,” Chapin said.

The madrigal choirs from each high school take turns hosting the event each year. The show is not meant to be a fundraiser, but it is an opportunity for the students to perform for the community.

Chapin said unless they have a sellout crowd, the choral department won’t make any money off the show but instead will use the ticket money to cover the show’s costs.

“If we do end up selling out, that money would go towards our new risers,” Chapin said. “We’re only $2,500 away.”

Reservations must be made to attend and all reservations must be paid by Friday, Nov. 4. No refunds will be given, and tickets can be picked up at the choral department or at the door.

Tickets are $25 for dinner and the show. To purchase tickets, call 601-218-8452.
