Redwood event nov. 5

The one-time fundraiser Redwood Elementary School holds each year is a week away, and students are already selling tickets for the event.

The 2016 annual Turkey Shoot, sponsored by the Redwood Elementary PTO, is scheduled for Nov. 5 and will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 100 Redwood Road.

In years past, the fundraiser has netted between $15,000 and $20,000 for the school, and this year Redwood is aiming to raise that much and more so they can move forward in becoming a Light House School, which is a part of the Leader In Me program, lead teacher Margie Heltzel said.

Funds will also be used for new risers for the auditorium and gifts for the accelerated reader program, Heltzel said.

The turkey shoot will be set up in a field beside the school and participants are required to bring their own shotgun. The school will supply the shells.

During each round, shooters will stand in lanes, and will be aiming at posts marked with targets. Once all the shots have been fired and the guns are emptied, targets will be gathered up, and a winner will be named, said Kala White, this year’s event coordinator.

“Whoever has the most holes in the target will win $10,” she said.

An adult must accompany any child participating in the event and for added safety measures, the Warren County Sheriff’s office will be on site.

Raffle tickets for the event are $2, which will buy one round in the turkey shoot and or a chance at a cash prize.

All raffle tickets, whether one participates in the shoot or not, will be entered into a drawing, White said, and the first name pulled will win $500, second $250 and third $100. One does not have to be present to win.

A carnival will be held in conjunction with the turkey shoot and will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $1 for four tickets and the event will include concessions, carnival games, a tattoo parlor, archery alley, Wheel of Fortune, inflatables, bingo, a cakewalk and a chicken walk.

“The chicken walk is like a cake walk,” Heltzel said, and winners will receive either frozen chicken nuggets or chicken breast that have been donated from vendors from surrounding areas.

A junior turkey shoot will also be held, and in lieu of a shotgun, the younger participants will use a B.B. gun, Heltzel said.

Terri Frazier was born in Cleveland. Shortly afterward, the family moved to Vicksburg. She is a part-time reporter at The Vicksburg Post and is the editor of the Vicksburg Living Magazine, which has been awarded First Place by the Mississippi Press Association. Terri is a member of the Crawford Street United Methodist Church. She is a lifetime member of the Vicksburg Junior Auxiliary and is a past member of the Sampler Antique Club and Town and Country Garden Club. She is married to Dr. Walter Frazier.

“From staying informed with local governmental issues to hearing the stories of its people, a hometown newspaper is vital to a community. I have felt privileged to be part of a dedicated team at The Post throughout my tenure and hope that with theirs and with local support, I will be able to continue to grow and hone in on my skills as I help share the stories in Vicksburg.
