Community should invest in waterfront, downtown facilities

With the temperatures falling to more seasonal levels, activity at Catfish Row, the splash pad and park has decreased. But it will not seem that long before the fountains are turned back on and children by the dozens are running through the water beating the heat.
This time of year, activity on Vicksburg’s waterfront is centered on Washington Street. The retail shops and eateries along downtown’s “main street” hustle and bustle this time of year.
But whether the season brings warm weather or cold weather, one thing is constant — a vibrant downtown.
For quite some time, we have challenged city leaders and those with economic development responsibilities to continue to find ways to build on the downtown atmosphere.
We have strongly critiqued Vicksburg’s waterfront appearance and experience.
Development and investment of the waterfront would go a long way in improving the “curb appeal” of Vicksburg to the thousands of visitors who arrive routinely on the riverboats.
Downtown, with new businesses, new restaurants, and more on the way, faces a challenge that must be improved — parking.
The city has talked about improvements to the city’s parking garages, but that work needs to be accelerated.
During big events, such as the annual Christmas parade, Fourth of July fireworks, and downtown concerts, parking downtown becomes a contact sport, often involving two cars as drivers take on parallel parking.
The parking garages need some attention and love. Paint, lighting and security would go a long way to help residents and visitors alike feel more comfortable using the garages.
Investment in these facilities, much like the desperately needed investment of the city’s waterfront, will go far in improving the overall Vicksburg experience.
