Monday’s presentation the next step in selling sports complex to Vicksburg

Monday, area residents will have the chance to see plans for the proposed sports complex.
They will have the chance to hear why the a city-owned property on Fisher Ferry Road is the best location, as well as other details included in a large feasibility study the city commissioned.
The Sports Force, the consulting company which was paid $50,000 to compile the study, will present a site analysis, a preliminary design for the project and other details.
This presentation gives members of the Vicksburg community the chance to give their thoughts, and ask questions, about this multi-million dollar project that has been years in the making.
It would be a shame if residents — who at times have been quite vocal about the need for such a complex — do not turn out for Monday’s 5:30 p.m. presentation at the Vicksburg Auditorium.
As for the sports complex, we have long support the idea of this project.
We believe — like many others — that a quality, top-tier sports complex could mean significant tax dollars for Vicksburg and go to further improve the quality of life in the Vicksburg and Warren County community.
A quality facility, like the one we hope is presented Monday, would put Vicksburg in position to lure large tournaments, continue to fill our hotels with visitors and provide local teams facilities to continue their development and competitive standing.
We have also supported the funding plans for the complex; a plan that would levy a 2-percent tax on restaurant food and beverage sales and hotel room rentals. It is a plan that does not place the burden of funding the construction of the complex entirely on the shoulders of local residents, but mostly on those who visit Vicksburg.
As far as the complex being located on Fisher Ferry Road, that ship has sailed.
Now, instead of continued complaining about the location, it is up to all of us to challenge project developers and city leadership on solutions to what we firmly believe to be road and traffic concerns in and out of the complex’s proposed location.
In the end though, Monday is all about the details.
The success of this project — and the planned referendum to approve the project — will depend on the information shared with the public, the answers given to the public’s questions and the input we all have in making this sports complex successful for Vicksburg.
We have high hopes for the proposed sports complex and it all begins with Monday’s meeting.
