We applaud the city’s strong, consistent action with Whispering Woods property

“Not good enough.”

That was the headline on Thursday’s edition of The Post in regards to the city’s lack of acceptance of a plan proposed to clean up the Whispering Woods Apartments.

The headline could have easily read, “No way,” “Get that out of here,” or “Better luck next time.”

The fact is, owners of this property have failed to properly manage their facility for quite sometime, but also have failed in providing a comprehensive plan on how they are going to clean up the property and provide residents a clean and suitable place to live.

It is that rejection we applaud.

The City of Vicksburg has far too much potential for properties of any size to become slum areas.

We understand policies and procedures are in place the city must follow before condemning property, citing absentee owners for the conditions of their property or declaring buildings and properties nuisances.

And while we were long critical of the length of time it took the city to earn ownership of the Kuhn Hospital property, today we applaud their reaction and response to what is an embarrassing state of affairs at Whispering Woods Apartments.

Trash is piled up, buildings abandoned and fire-scarred apartments remain standing and unattended.

To have such an example of gross negligence proves the city must be strong, and consistent, when dealing with property owners that have not shown the ability, or the desire to properly take care of what they own.

And, more could be done.

While we do not advocate the demolition of homes and buildings — especially those of historic significance or in historic areas — the city must weigh the public’s health and the impact to neighboring homeowners and property owners in getting unsightly areas cleaned up.

Due process is crucial, but being aggressive on getting areas of Vicksburg cleaned out is needed.

The City of Vicksburg has been tough with the owners of the Whispering Woods Apartments, and the residents of Vicksburg, and the residents of these apartments should be thankful.
