Things will be heating up this weekend, as teams square off to compete Saturday in the eighth annual Chili For Children Cook Off.

The event, which is sponsored by the Radio People and Lady Luck Casino, is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. next to the Lady Luck arena, 1380 Warrenton Road.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Warren County Children’s Shelter.

The Radio People Station manager Deloris Evans said those competing in the cook-off may begin arriving at 7 a.m. and judging will take place at noon.

The cost to enter the competition is $50, and Evans said there are a few spots left.

“We could use about five more teams to reach our max,” she said.

Judges for the cook-off will include Rick Smith from Farm Bureau, Andrea Upchurch from Jones and Upchurch Reality and Evelyn Johnson, who was a former disc jockey with River 101, Evans said.

The first place winner of the competition will take home a $150 cash prize and a trophy, second place will receive $100 cash prize and a trophy and third place will get a trophy.

“We will also be giving out awards for the best decorated booth and a People’s Choice Award,” Evans said.

Evans said the first year the fundraiser was held at Vicksburg Cycles and was sponsored by the ABATE motorcycle club.

“And then the next year they asked if we (the Radio People) would take it over,” she said.

Since the inaugural event, the fundraiser has grown, Evans said and last year more than 2,100 people attended.

The event also raised nearly $17,000 for the children’s shelter.

The cost to attend the cook off is $10 and free for ages 10 and younger.

D.J. Burk will be on-site performing during the event, Evans said, and there will be activities for children.

“We will have a tattoo booth, face painting, jumpy houses and Sunshine the clown will be making balloon animals,” she said.
