Bulldogs lose, Golden Eagles cruise

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State’s bats stayed hot, but its pitching was not.

Mississippi State’s pitchers walked seven batters, while Marist collected 11 hits and rode an early surge to a 9-8 victory over the Bulldogs.

Tyler Kapuscinski went 3-for-4 and scored four runs for Marist (4-3), while Frankie Gregoire and Greg Kocinski each drove in three runs. The Red Foxes led by as many as seven runs, at 8-1 in the fourth inning, before Mississippi State scored twice in the fifth and four times in the sixth to get back in it.

Jake Mangum was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and three runs scored for Mississippi State (6-3). Luke Alexander had three RBIs, and Ryan Gridley was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Mississippi State has scored at least eight runs in each of its last eight games. It won three out of four games this weekend at Dudy Noble Field, having split two with Marist and beating Indiana State twice.

Southern Miss 18, Evansville 2

Southern Miss slugged its way to a weekend sweep of Evansville on Sunday.

Casey Maack went 3-for-5 with a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored as Southern Miss routed Evansville.

Southern Miss (6-1) outscored the Purple Aces 41-14 in the three-game series. Evansville (1-6) scored 10 of its 14 runs in the opener on Friday night.

On Sunday, the Golden Eagles had 18 hits, and 10 different players drove in at least one run. After scoring six runs in the fifth inning to go up 7-1, they erupted for 11 runs in the sixth to make it 18-1.

Dylan Burdeaux homered and scored three runs for Southern Miss. Mason Irby and Hunter Slater also scored three runs apiece.

Slater, Taylor Braley, Tracy Hadley and Matthew Guidry each had two RBIs.

Evansville’s two runs came on solo home runs by Trey Hair and Korbin Williams.
Southern Miss will host Tulane on Wednesday.
