Twenty-two debutantes take part in 45th annual ball

The 45th annual Les Soeurs Charmantes Social and Civic Club Debutante Ball was held Feb. 18. Twenty-two young women were recognized during the annual event that was held at the Vicksburg Auditorium.

Verlondrea Renee’ Austin was crowned Miss Debutante 2017 and Bobbi Shynae’ Taylor was chosen as Miss Congeniality 2017.

The theme for this year’s ball was Masterpiece…A Portrait of Perfection.

In addition to the presentation of the debutantes, the evening included vocal performances by Mr. Roderick Sturgis who was accompanied by Mrs. Shirley Harris.

Serving as chairman for the event was Mrs. Lisa McGowan. Mrs. Leah Sullivan was co-chairman.

Ms. Muriel Holmes served as the choreographer for the ball and Ms. Megan Sullivan was narrator.

This year’s souvenir book was dedicated to Ms. Angela Jenkins and Ms. Emma Miller Roberts.

Dr. Ethel Lassiter serves as the president of the club and members include Mrs. Helen Bowman, Mrs. Carolyn Bradford, Mrs. Gwendolyn Brown, Ms. Beverly Gaskin, Dr. Kenya Gaskin, Dr. Allene Gayles, Mrs. Shirley Harris, Mrs. Willie Mae Harrison, Ms. Lisa Johnson, Mrs. Mary Kenney, Mrs. Lisa McGowan, Mrs. Edna Minor, Mrs. Natasha Moran, Mrs. Sherrie Moran, Mrs. Deborah Potts, Dr. Alice Powell, Mrs. Carolyn Strothers, and Mrs. Leah Sullivan.

4 Akima Darriana-Unique Adams, a senior at Warren Central High School, is the daughter of Mr. Darrick Adams and Ms. LaShanta Strong. She was escorted by Khailil Amos, the son of Mr. Alfred Amos and Mrs. Lisa Neal.

4 Jayla Michelle Atlas, a senior at Vicksburg High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael (Glenda) Atlas. She was escorted by Malik Shelley, the son of Mr. Charles Shelley and Mrs. Angela Galloway.

4 Verlondrea Renee’ Austin, a senior at Northwest Rankin High School, is the daughter of Mr. Henry Lee Austin and Ms. Valtressia Austin Givens. She was escorted by Robert Simmons II, the son of Mr. Robert Simmons, Sr. and Ms. Sonya Boyd.

4 Lily Muriel Brown, a senior at Vicksburg High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John (Pamela) Brown. She was escorted by TeyJehon King, the son of Mr. Toma King and Ms. Kimela O’Neal.

4 Virgie Alexis Demby, a senior at Vicksburg High School, is the daughter of Mr. Alexander Demby and Ms. Cathy Demby. She was escorted by Branden Humphrey, the son of Mr. Bryant Humphrey and Ms. Felicia Humphrey.

4 Ariyana Antoinette Dotson, a senior at Vicksburg High School, is the daughter of Mr. Jerrick Dotson and Ms. MaLinda Hill. She was escorted by Kevin Williams, Jr., the son of Mr. Kevin Williams, Sr. and Mrs. Tracie Davenport.

4 Ronesha Quinshae Peterson-Tucker, a senior at Vicksburg High School, is the daughter of Mr. Royal Tucker and Mr. and Mrs. Frederick (Billia) Knight. She was escorted by Cameron Davis, the son of the Late Ms. Surrenda Davis.

4 Kierra Alexandra Wells, a senior at Vicksburg High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael (Monica) Wells. She was escorted by Taevion Doss, the son of Ms. Tiawanda Doss.

About Terri Cowart Frazier

Terri Frazier was born in Cleveland. Shortly afterward, the family moved to Vicksburg. She is a part-time reporter at The Vicksburg Post and is the editor of the Vicksburg Living Magazine, which has been awarded First Place by the Mississippi Press Association. She has also been the recipient of a First Place award in the MPA’s Better Newspaper Contest’s editorial division for the “Best Feature Story.”

Terri graduated from Warren Central High School and Mississippi State University where she received a bachelor’s degree in communications with an emphasis in public relations.

Prior to coming to work at The Post a little more than 10 years ago, she did some freelancing at the Jackson Free Press. But for most of her life, she enjoyed being a full-time stay at home mom.

Terri is a member of the Crawford Street United Methodist Church. She is a lifetime member of the Vicksburg Junior Auxiliary and is a past member of the Sampler Antique Club and Town and Country Garden Club. She is married to Dr. Walter Frazier.

“From staying informed with local governmental issues to hearing the stories of its people, a hometown newspaper is vital to a community. I have felt privileged to be part of a dedicated team at The Post throughout my tenure and hope that with theirs and with local support, I will be able to continue to grow and hone in on my skills as I help share the stories in Vicksburg. When asked what I like most about my job, my answer is always ‘the people.’
