Vicksburg police Capt. Sandra Williams said Reynolds also has a hold placed on him by the Mississippi Department of Corrections.

Gaines’ death was the first homicide in the city for 2017, Police Chief Walter Armstrong said.

Williams said the shooting was the sixth in the city since Feb. 11. Gaines, she said, was wounded in the leg in a Feb. 24 shooting in the 2800 block of Drummond Street, but refused to work with police investigating the case.

Gaines, 30, 163 Elizabeth Circle, died about 2:07 a.m. Wednesday at University of Mississippi Medical Center.

He was a passenger in the rear seat of a car traveling south on U.S. 61 South Tuesday night when he was shot in the head.

He was taken by a private vehicle to Merit Health River Region and later flown by helicopter to UMC.

Besides the Tuesday shooting and the Feb. 24 shooting involving Gaines, other shootings in the city include:

• Feb. 11, Lamarien Harper, 16, is arrested and charged with aggravated assault for shooting another teen at the New Main Apartments.

• Feb. 28, While out on bond for the Feb. 11 shooting, Harper and Darion Turner, 15, are arrested and charged with drive-by shooting and aggravated assault. Harper is ordered held without bond.

• Tuesday, 5:30 p.m. DeShawn Williams, age 25, 502 Farmer St., is accused of shooting his girlfriend in the chest during the argument in the vicinity of South Street.

• A man reported at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday someone followed his car on Cain Ridge Road, shooting at his vehicle and striking it.
