The Warren County Port Commission is leasing about 3 acres in the Ceres Industriplex to the Bovina Volunteer Fire Department to build a fire station in the industrial park.

The commission Monday voted 4-0 to lease 2.93 acres of land to build the Bovina No. 2 Fire Station at the corner of Tantec Way and Henry Lake Road. The vote followed a presentation on the proposed facility by county fire coordinator Jerry Briggs.

“Our plan is for a drive-through station with a couple of bays,” Briggs told the commissioners. “One of the things it will actually do is enhance the fire service for the industrial park, and their insurance rating also. It will also improve the insurance rating for the surrounding communities as well.”

Getting a fire station in the industrial park would lower the area’s fire insurance rating from its present Class 10, meaning no fire protection, to a Class 6, Briggs said.

“The location of where we’re trying to put this station benefits the entire industrial park,” he said. “It will basically connect the (Bovina fire) district back to Bovina on Tiffin Town (Road).”

Besides containing the station, Briggs said future plans for the property include a training center for the county’s volunteer fire departments.

“It’ going to save a lot of people money plus the headache of possibly putting fires out, and (possibly) having other businesses coming in knowing there’s a fire station on site,” said commissioner Mike Roach, who moved to grant the lease.
