Whether a Vicksburg doctor, or a would-be scientist, Vicksburg is comprised of some dedicated and talented people, no matter the age. 

On Thursday, Bowmar Elementary School fifth grader Adalyn Reece Anderson, took home a first place award in the four through six grade engineering division and best overall for her age group at the 2017 MSEF Region II Science Fair that was held at Jackson State University.

Anderson’s project, “Eggceptionally Safe” tested three different types of bubble wrap and their ability to keep an egg from cracking when dropped for a height of 25 feet. She tested what she called “standard,” “medium,” and “bulky” wraps.

“My hypothesis was that the more medium sized one was going to work better, because it looked more cushiony and was blown up a little bigger than what the standard sized one we usually use is,” Anderson said.

Each bubble wrap was tested three times, Anderson said, and her hypothesis quickly proved to be on point as the egg survived three falls when wrapped in the medium sized wrap.

After learning she had won, Anderson said she was in shock.

“When I got on stage, everything felt a little dizzy at the moment. When I was leaving, I was like this is just a dream. I am going to wake up in a moment and we are going to have to redo this and I’m not going to get anything.”

It was not a dream though, and she has the medal and trophy to prove it.

• On Saturday, Dr. Gloria Butler, who practices family medicine, participated in a health fair held at Calvary Baptist Church.
• Butler said if you want to stay healthy and avoid chronic diseases, know your blood pressure, weight, glucose levels and cholesterol.

“If we, as a community, don’t take things in our own hands and start taking care of ourselves, we are going to find ourselves with more disability, more likely to be a burden to the health care system and more likely to have a short time on this earth,” Butler said

• Warren Central High School’s Amber Gaston earned The Vicksburg Post’s girls basketball Player of the Year award. She is the first Warren Central player to win it since 2009.
• Vicksburg High School’s Kirk Parker earned The Vicksburg Post’s boys basketball Player of the Year award.
