Downtown Vicksburg’s parking garages need some love and attention

Just like most things, the social calendar in Vicksburg and Warren County comes to life in the spring.

Calendars begin filling up with yard sales, youth baseball and softball games and tournaments, arts and crafts shows, festivals and more.

This weekend in Vicksburg is a perfect example.

With local ball fields hosting tournaments and games, and downtown playing host to the annual Riverfest and Saturday’s arts and crafts show also downtown, plenty is on tap to entertain residents and visitors alike.

But, downtown, with all of the events and visitors is in need of a little help. It is in need of a little love and attention from those groups and organizations whose mission it is to promote and develop downtown.

Just as one would spend time in their yard and flower beds over the first few weeks of spring, so too does downtown need a little work on its curb appeal.

In this case, the curb appeal is in regards to the availability and appearance of parking areas downtown.

Curbside parking is limited and small parking lots fill up quickly, which leaves the city’s parking garages. And it is those garages that are the problem.

While lighting has been improved, some areas remain far too dark.

While some painting has been done, graffiti remains strewn across many of the walls, some not suitable for any eyes, much less those visiting Vicksburg for the first time.

Main Street and the City of Vicksburg have placed some attention on the garages, but far too much work remains to be done.

Security cameras need to be installed and monitored. Trash and debris needs to be cleaned up and the overall appearance of the garages better maintained.

It is true these garages are free to use. But, the mere condition and appearance of the garages at times does not make them a suitable parking solution on a busy weekend downtown.

Downtown Vicksburg is a perfect postcard for Vicksburg and is used — rightfully so — to market the quality of life those of us who live and work in Vicksburg enjoy. But, the downtown parking garages are an issue and one that needs attention.
