The Vicksburg Orchestral Society will present its spring concert Sunday starting at 4 p.m. at the Parkside Playhouse.
This year’s concert will feature Sergei Prokofiev’s symphonic fairy tale “Peter and the Wolf” and an instrument “petting zoo” during the intermission.
“The concert Sunday afternoon is pointed towards the young people,” Dorothy Bromsfield said. “The music has been selected specifically so they will enjoy it.”
The “petting zoo” will enable children to get up close with the orchestra’s instruments and learn more about how they work.
“I think the petting zoo will be an opportunity, particularly for the younger children, to see the instruments and see how they are played and see what it takes to play an instrument,” Bromsfield said.
“Peter and the Wolf” is a 30-minute long piece with a narration that tells the story of a boy who goes into the woods without his grandfather’s permission. Each character in the story is represented by one of the instruments in the orchestra.
“Peter is represented with the strings,” Bromsfield said. “Grandfather is the bassoon. The duck is an oboe. There is a bird that is the flute. Peter goes out in the woods and then finally the hunters come. The hunters are portrayed by the percussion.”
The wolf is portrayed by the horns section.
The concert will open with Paul Dukas’ “Fanfare from la peri.” It will be followed by Crafton Beck’s “Orchestra Demo” and “Peter and the Wolf” before the intermission.
The second half of the concert will open with Georges Bizet’s “Carmen Suite 1” and “Carmen Suite 2.” The orchestra will then perform Aaron Copland’s “Hoe Down from the Rodeo,” Gioachino Rossini’s “Barber of Seville Overture” and “Wonderful World.”
The performance is expected to last an hour and is free to attend.
