Agnes Herlong Mitchell

Agnes Herlong Mitchell died April 8, 2017, at the Choctaw Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ackerman, MS.  She was 90.

She was born June 10, 1926 in Port Gibson.  She was the daughter of Thomas Eugene and Lottie Theadford Herlong.   

She moved to Vicksburg after graduating high school.  She was an employee of Marcus Furniture, First National Bank, Street Clinic and Waterways Experiment Station.

She was first married to Harmon Sidney Prosser of McComb, who died in 1970.  They were the parents of two children, Sidney and Barbara Ann. She later married Dr. Tom Herron Mitchell in 1979. 

After retiring from Waterways, she spent time gardening, traveling, working at First Presbyterian Church, and enjoying her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by Dr. Mitchell; her daughter, Barbara Prosser Forrest; and grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann Waites of Vicksburg and Rhett Mitchell Sutphin of Chicago.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Sidney Prosser (Jennifer) of Starkville; and Dr. Mitchell’s children, Emily Mitchell Sutphin (John) of Leawood, Kan., Kathleen Mitchell Haskins (Jerry) of Vicksburg, Charles Dennis Mitchell (Nancy) of Oxford, John Herron Mitchell (Rita) of Jackson; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great- grandchildren.

Graveside service will be Thursday, April 13, at 11 a.m. at Greenlawn Garden. 

Visitation will be at Riles Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Averett, Nathan Jones, Richard Ledbetter, Charlie Mitchell, John Mitchell, Andy Prosser, Will Prosser and Cory Winders.

The Rev. Tim Brown, pastor at First Presbyterian, will officiate.  Riles Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
