When hundreds of people come together for a special day of volunteerism, helping local groups and agencies with much needed projects and giving of their time and talents, it is more than just a normal day, it is a “Day of Caring.”

The 20th annual United Way of West Central Mississippi’s annual Day of Caring is scheduled for Thursday, April 27 and volunteers are still needed to help on one of 16 projects planned for the day.

“My favorite part of Day of Caring is being able to see the community come together and see all the new relationships that have been formed,” Heidi Burrell, the United Way’s Director of Resource Development, said. “You do not want to miss this 20 year celebration.”

The 16 projects are scheduled at local non-profit organizations around Warren County.

The day will begin with a rally at the Vicksburg Mall from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Immediately following, teams will head to their project sites and work through the morning and afternoon on the various projects.

During next Thursday’s kick-off, those businesses who have been a part of the Day of Caring for each of the past 20 years will be recognized.

Burrell specifically mentioned businesses such as Trustmark Bank, Ameristar Casino, Kroger, while there are others who “lend their voice, money and muscle each year to make sure Day of Caring is enjoyable for everyone involved. “

Aside from helping the agencies, Burrell is hoping those volunteering will learn more about the agencies they are helping, and the groups they are teamed with.

“While learning more about the agencies, I hope volunteers have networking opportunities with other community supporters,” she said. “Businesses are usually paired up with other businesses and form relationships that may not have ever been formed.”

Some of the projects include such activities as landscaping, delivering meals to homebound seniors, painting, minor home repairs, making arts and crafts with elderly seniors, pressure washing buildings and more.

Volunteers are still being accepted and will be accepted the day of the event. Those interested in volunteering for Day of Caring, should contact Heidi Burrell at 601-636-1733 or by email at heidi@unitedwayvicksburg.org.
