Do you have expired or unwanted medication at home, but are unsure of how to properly dispose of it?

The Vicksburg Police Department will be hosting a drug take-back day Saturday at Walgreens from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will be accepting narcotics, prescription medication, over the counter medication and vitamins for safe disposable. During the program they will not accept syringes, liquids, inhalants, ointments or lotions.

“This is an opportunity to get rid of any unused medicine,” Vicksburg Police Chief Walter Armstrong said. “These drugs can also wind up in the hands of teenagers and even thieves. We think it is a good plan that we put in place several years ago.”

The police department will accept the drugs with no questions asked.

“It doesn’t matter how you present them,” Armstrong said. “No questions asked. You drop them off, keep going and we’ll take care of the rest.”

Armstrong said they typically host a drug take-back day twice a year and also have a permanent bin in the lobby of the police station where citizens can dispose of unwanted, expire and unused medication at any time.

“Any drugs, over the counter, prescription narcotics, anything that might be lying around and you want to properly dispose of them,” Armstrong said. “You shouldn’t flush these down the toilet. You shouldn’t throw these down the drain.”

The goal of the program is to enable citizens to properly dispose of drugs that could cause health hazards in the home were someone to take the wrong medication and to keep the drugs from ending up in the wrong hands.

“We are strengthening the safety in our community by giving the citizens an outlet to dispose of unused medicine the proper way,” Armstrong said.

The drugs that are collected will be turned over to the DEA who will dispose of them.
