The National Weather Service has increased the crest for the Mississippi River at Vicksburg by .5 feet, from 46 feet to 46.5 feet, Warren County Emergency Management director John Elfer said.

“We’re looking at the crest of 46.5 feet by May 18,” he said Thursday. “That means the road to Eagle Lake will be closed,” he said. Elfer said he will begin sending out daily bulletins to local officials starting Friday.

The increase marks the second time the Mississippi’s crest here has changed. National Weather Service forecasters April 28 initially predicted a 44.5-foot crest at Vicksburg on May16. The crest was increased in early May to 46 feet on May 18, and the Mississippi Thursday was at 43. 9 feet, nine-tenths of a foot above its 43-foot flood stage.

High water began covering several roads near the river, with Zigler Road, Laney Camp Road, Chickasaw and Long Lake Road, going underwater. The Kings Point ferry was also closed because of the high water.

City officials have barricaded Long Lake Road and blocked off one opening in the floodwall. Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said city officials will not take any further action in the city at this time.

Elfer said more streets and roads are expected to be inundated, including some areas of Ford Subdivision and the Kings community.

“We’ll see water in the streets, but I don’t think we’ll see any water in homes,” Elfer said.

According to the National Weather Service, the county will see the following impact:

• 43 feet: Jackson Lane in North Vicksburg begins to flood.

• 43.5 feet: Long Lake Subdivision is completely flooded. Vicksburg Floodwall gates at train depot and the lumber yard gate 8 are closed.

• 44 feet: Ford and Kings Subdivision at Pittman Road and Mary’s Alley begins to flood.

• 44.6 feet: Residences on Williams Street begin to flood.

• 45 feet: Ford and Kings subdivisions at Williams Street begin to flood.

• 46 feet: Water level reaches the grain bins at the Bunge Grain facility.

• 46.5 feet: Portions of Mississippi 465, Eagle Lake Road, and several houses are underwater. Portions of Letourneau Road in South Vicksburg are flooded.
