The Memorial Day weekend has so far been a quiet one on the roads for Warren County authorities said Sunday.

Deputy Vicksburg police chief Bobby Stewart said as of 4 p.m. Sunday there had been no wrecks or DUI arrests in the city.

In the county, Sheriff Martin Pace said deputies worked six wrecks with no serious injuries and reported one DUI arrest.

The county’s biggest problem, he said, was fallen trees knocked down by a brief but violent storm with high winds that passed through the county Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service observation site at the Vicksburg-Tallulah Regional Airport, winds accompanying the system were measured at 16 mph with gusts as high as 20 mph.

“We had 12 to 15 trees blown down across the county and blocking roads,” Pace said. “Many had electrical wires in them so we had to wait for Entergy to come cut the power so we could remove them.”

The downed lines in the county and the city caused scattered power outages, which at one time had about 300 Entergy customers in the dark Sunday morning. Entergy customer service representative Shelia McKinnis said at 4 p.m. 71 customers remained without power and were expected to get their power back by 7 p.m. Sunday.
