“It keeps it from being thrown out on the side of the road,” Warren County Environmental Officer Katie Strong said.  “We do it to help clean up Warren County. If people will bring it out and get rid of, then it gets rid of it without it going into streams and into the ground around here.”

Last year, 883 cars came through the collection area disposing of 21,000 pounds of electronics, 31,420 pounds of scrap metal, 154 batteries, 1,000 gallons of used oil, almost 500 gallons of unwanted paint and more.

“A lot of these people are trying to be environmentally conscious,” Strong said. “They don’t just want to throw an empty paint can or a paint can with half a gallon of paint in it in the garbage. They hold onto it for a year, or however long. They know we have this every year and they bring stuff out every year.”

The Board of Supervisors partners with Care Environmental from Orlando, who disposes of the collected materials properly.

During the drive they also collect non-hazardous, but unwanted items including clothes, furniture and tires. The clothes and furniture are collected by River City Missions and the county’s road department disposes of the tires.

There will also be station where people can shred sensitive documents that they wish to dispose of.
