Carl William Cappaert

Carl William Cappaert passed away Monday, June 5, 2017, in Jackson.  He was 92. 

He was born April 4, 1925, in Clare, Mich.  He was the son of Emil and Bertha Cappaert.  He graduated from Clare High School and immediately enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.  After the war, he attended Michigan State University, where he was a four-year varsity letterman on the football team.  He received a Master’s Degree in Biology and began teaching and coaching in Aurora, Ill.  He was married to the love of his life, Janet Cappaert, for 72 years.

Carl and Janet moved to Vicksburg in 1962 to join Magnolia Homes.  He continued to work in Vicksburg with the manufactured housing industry until his retirement.  They spent many years traveling the world together.  He was an avid gardener and bird watcher.  He was a communicant and active member of St. Paul Catholic Church for 55 years, the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Club, the Lions Club and a lifetime S Club member at Michigan State.  He volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity and the St. Paul ministry to bring communion to homebound parishioners.  He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband and father.    He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Janet Cappaert; his brother, F.L. Cappaert; his sisters, Mary Denton and Helen Tice; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Cappaert.

He is survived by his brother, Donald Cappaert (Mary Sue); his children, Carolyn Martin (Jim), Amy Franco, Steve Cappaert (Kim) and Beth Ridley (Jack); seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. 

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, June 9, at St. Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Tom Lalor officiating. 

Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home. 

Visitation will be Friday from 10 a.m. until the hour of service at the church.  Pallbearers will be Mike Cappaert, Danny Cappaert, Brent Cappaert, Mike Jackson, Jim Martin and Jack Ridley.
