Vicksburg police are holding a 17-year-old teenager in connection with the shooting death of a Vicksburg man, Capt. Sandra Williams said.

The body of Anderson White III, 22, was found  in a wooded area off Military Avenue. He appeared to have been shot at least once. He was declared dead at the scene by Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey and his body was taken to the state Crime Laboratory in Jackson for an autopsy.

Williams said Robert Harris, 17,  turned himself in to investigators at the Vicksburg Police Department about 3 p.m. Friday. No charges have been filed, and information on the type of weapon used was unavailable.

The events leading to the investigation of White’s death began about 11:35 p.m. Thursday, when police responded to a call of shots fired in the area of Military and Roosevelt Avenue but found no activity.

About 10:45 a.m. Friday, officers returned to the area after a vehicle was found crashed into a road sign indicating a wreck had occurred. Investigators found biological evidence at the scene, indicating  a crime may have occurred, and after a search in the area,  left the scene. Investigators were later able to determine the vehicle was last driven by White.

At about  12:45 p.m. Friday, relatives and friends called E911 when they located White’s body in a wooded area in the 2000 block of Military Avenue.

“This is an ongoing investigation in an attempt to determine the motive and to find out what happened,” Williams said, adding police were questioning Harris and other people about the shooting.

The death is the third homicide in the city this year.

Quintessa Shelton, 19,  was charged with murder in the May 27 shooting of Benjamin Brooks Jr., 19, at 200 Starlight Drive.  Reginald Gaines, 30, died March 8 from a gunshot wound to the head when someone shot into a southbound car on U.S. 61 South in which he was a passenger. Byron Martez Reynolds, 31, and Christopher Brown, 24, were each charged with second-degree murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle in connection with the death.
