A week after winning the Clear Creek Club Championships, Vicksburg native Channing Curtis was back on the golf course Tuesday for the USGA Amateur Qualifier at Annandale Golf Club in Madison.

Curtis was one of 49 golfers from the region playing for a chance to qualify for the USGA Amateur Championships, which will be played in California in August.

The tournament required players to compete in two 18-hole rounds on Tuesday.

“It is exhausting,” Curtis said of playing two rounds in the same day. “You are walking 36 holes and that is a lot on anybody, but you make it through it.”

Curtis finished tied for 38th in the tournament after shooting an 8-over par 80 in the first round and a 6-over par 78 in the second round to finish 14-over par.

“I’m hitting the ball well,” Curtis said. “I’ll miss it by a foot or two here or there and you catch a bad break here or there. You miss it by a foot or two and its firm and fast that is trouble. I have to hit my spots a little better than I did.”

He started the first round on No. 10 and played back to No. 9. He was 3-over through the first nine holes with birdies Nos. 12 and 17. He made four bogeys and a double-bogey with only one birdie on the second nine to finish 8-over.

“It was pretty tough,” Curtis said of the first round. “It is real firm and fast. I hit the ball pretty good, but I couldn’t score well.”

He started the second round on No. 1 and shot 1-under par on the same nine holes he had shot 5-over par on earlier in the day including birdies on Nos. 5 and 8. He shot a 7-over par on the back nine with four bogeys and two double-bogeys to finish at 14-over for the tournament.

The tournament was won by Nathan Jeansonne who is entering his sophomore season on the golf team at LSU. He finished 7-under par for the tournament.

In second was Wilson Furr from Jackson who played for the U.S. in the junior Ryder Cup last year.
