SUMMERVILLE, S.C. — Johannus Bernardus “Benno” Van Ryswyk left this earth for a better place July 7, 2017, in the comfort of his home surrounded by family. He was 78.

He was born in 1938 in The Netherlands as the youngest of five boys. He came to the U.S. in 1958 and was quickly drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served in France and the U.S.

He worked for both Shell Oil Co. (east and west coast) and Hill City Oil in Vicksburg, where he resided for 23 years. Upon retirement, he and Truus moved to Charleston, S.C., to be closer to family.

Benno was a loving husband, father and grandfather. One of his favorite things was to spend time with his family. He was also an avid reader and loved to watch his nature shows. He had a great compassion for those less fortunate and gave generously to those in need. He did not know a stranger and often engaged people in conversation where ever he could. His family will miss his sense of humor, his kindness and his love dearly.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Truus; his three children, Helen Wainwright (Greg), Martin Van Ryswyk (Amy) and Amy Litz (Aaron); and five grandchildren, Brandon, Brooke, Lily, Jonah and Abby.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Village at Summerville Presbyterian Community who provided supportive care for him and his family.

A memorial service will be July 15, at 11 a.m. at Parks Funeral Home in Summerville, with the family receiving guests at their home to follow.

Arrangements are by Parks Funeral Home, 130 W. 1st North Street, Summerville, S.C. 29483. www.parksfuneralhome.com
