Jake Dornbusch had the lead once and lost it at the Vicksburg Country Club Championship. He got it again, and now will keep it for a full year.
Dornbusch proved to be the steadiest player over three days at VCC, shooting a final-round 71 on Sunday to claim a three-stroke victory and his second VCC Championship. Dornbusch also won in 2012.
Dornbusch had the lead after the first round on Friday, but lost it to Jeff Harpole on Saturday. Dornbusch wound up posting rounds of 70, 72 and 71 for a total of 213, however, which was the key to victory.
Harpole struggled to a 78 in the final round and watched his one-shot lead evaporate. He wound up third, with a three-round total of 219.
Nick Mekus had the low round Sunday with a 70 and finished second, at 216, but couldn’t overcome an opening-round 77.
John Halpin Caldwell finished fourth at 222, with three consecutive rounds of 74, but never had a single round good enough to push for the lead. None of the other four golfers in the championship flight — Eddie Buckner, Matt Bell, John Robert Ward and Wilson Palmertree — had a round better than 74.
That left Dornbusch alone in the lead, and with the championship trophy for the second time.
In the other flights, Charles Waring shot a 73 on Sunday to win the First Flight with a total of 230. Eric Richards was second at 234, and Mike Curtis third at 235.
John Duett shot a 252 to win the Second Flight. He carded an 82 on Sunday. Joshua Larsen was second at 255.
