Model airplanes big and small will be taking to the skies in Vicksburg Saturday as the River City Radio Control Club celebrates National Model Aviation Day.

The club will celebrate the event starting at 2 p.m. at their flying field Crosswind Air Park, which is located near the intersection of Halls Ferry and 9-mile Cutoff roads.

“Our goal, starting about 2 p.m., is to keep at least plane in the air for an entire hour or more,” club member Tony Tullos said. “As one takes off and flies, another one is ready when the first is ready to come down.”

Tullos said that there are about 20 members in the club and they are hoping that as many of them as can, come out to the event and show off their planes. The event is open to the public to attend, but the actual flying will be limited to the planes’ owners Tullos said.

“We will have all different kinds of radio controlled model airplanes from planes that have a wingspan of a couple feet to eight feet,” he said. “It will be all prop propeller driven airplanes. No jets. No drones.”

Tullos added that if weather and time permit, the members will also participate in competitive flying activities including spot landing, climb and glide contests and fast pass/slow pass competitions.
