In an effort to allow students the opportunity to view the solar eclipse, the Vicksburg Catholic School will be releasing its students at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21.

After much deliberation, St. Aloysius principal Dr. Buddy Strickland said the administration felt like this was the best decision for the school.

Due to the nature and potential risk of retina damage to the eye, when viewing a solar eclipse, Strickland said the faculty felt like watching this rare phenomenon should be a decision made by the parents of each individual student.

“Student and employee safety are of the upmost importance to VCS,” Strickland said. Additionally, Strickland said, this decision assures students who drive will not be on the roadway during the eclipse.

All students will need to be picked up by 11:15 a.m., Strickland said, adding that there will also be no lunch served or after school care.

Strickland said in light of this decision, teachers at the school have been educating students, appropriately, about the solar eclipse and at the end of the close of the school day, each student will be provided NASA approved ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses.

Also, students will be given a letter on safety tips for viewing.
