The Board of Mayor and Aldermen is going to Kings.

Mayor George Flaggs Jr. Monday called a special meeting of the board for Aug. 31 at the Kings Empowerment Center on R.L. Chase Circle. That  day is the deadline for a committee of Kings, Ford Subdivision, Waltersville and Chickasaw residents to deliver recommendations on spending $1 million in capital improvements bond money to improve the community.

“We will be in the Kings area on Aug. 31 at 6 o’clock with a mandatory division heads meeting and board meeting,” he said. “Somebody said when you call a special meeting, and it’s off premises, it has to be three-day’s notice; I’m giving two weeks’ notice. We’re going to have an official city hall meeting — board meeting. We’re taking city hall to Kings for the first time.”

Flaggs said he also plans to have a similar meeting in the South Ward at the Vicksburg Municipal Airport in the future.

“That’s all department heads; police chief, deputy chiefs, fire chief, deputy chiefs, budget, clerk. Mandatory,” Flaggs said.

“We pay enough money to go out into the community and let the people see who works for the city of Vicksburg and how they perform their duties.”

Flaggs said he expects to receive the report from the citizens committee Aug. 31.

“I intend to improve Kings,” he said.

At his inauguration on July 1, Flaggs promised to allocate $1 million of the second half of an $18 million capital improvements bond issue toward improving Kings.

On July 20, he and North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield, who represents the area, met with residents to discuss possible improvements for Kings and the surrounding area along North Washington Street, and explained some drainage projects being designed for the area. The residents committee was formed after the meeting.
