With Hurricane Irma expected to cause widespread damage throughout Florida and the coast of Georgia, Entergy crews from Vicksburg and throughout Mississippi are preparing to lend a helping hand.

Entergy customer service representative Shelia McKinnis said three to four workers and trucks will be leaving Vicksburg at 6 a.m. Sunday to head to Florida to assist those impacted by Irma.

“Entergy is sending crews from Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas to assist with the restoration from Irma,” McKinnis said. “We won’t compromise our needs here before considering sending workers.”

The plan to send workers to Florida comes on the heels of four workers and their trucks being sent to Texas to help restore power following Hurricane Harvey. McKinnis said the workers who went to Texas have already returned and she was unsure if it would be the same or different workers being sent to Florida.

McKinnis said there were a few workers from each network sent to assist in Texas and it was a “pretty large number” of workers who were sent statewide.

“We are preparing to be available to assist them (Florida),” McKinnis said.

As of Friday afternoon, Irma was a Category 4 hurricane. It is expected to make landfall in Florida Sunday morning and impact nearly the entire state before moving into Georgia. According to a model published by researchers at the University of Michigan, Irma is expected to leave more than 2.6 million people without power in Florida, Georgia and Tennessee.
