Georgia humbles Mississippi State

ATHENS, Ga. — Mississippi State’s stint as a team to watch in the Southeastern Conference was brief.

The Bulldogs managed only 280 yards of total offense and were held to a single field goal as they were blown out 31-3 by No. 11 Georgia on Saturday night.

Mississippi State (3-1, 1-1 SEC) rocketed up to No. 17 in this week’s Associated Press poll following a blowout win over LSU, but hardly looked like a Top 25 team when it went on the road to Sanford Stadium.

Mississippi State’s Nick Fitzgerald, the SEC’s reigning Offensive Player of the Week, was just 14-of-29 passing for 83 yards, with no touchdowns and two interceptions. He ran for 47 yards as well, but the visiting Bulldogs never came close to getting in gear.

Georgia (4-0, 1-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and then rode an efficient offense and dominating defense to an easy victory.

Quarterback Jake Fromm tossed a 59-yard touchdown pass to Terry Godwin on a flea flicker on Georgia’s first possession of the game and added a 41-yard TD toss to Isaac Nauta in the third quarter. Fromm was 9-of-12 passing for 201 yards and did not throw an interception.

Georgia finished with 404 yards of offense.

Nick Chubb ran for 81 yards and two touchdowns, including a 28-yarder early in the third quarter that put Georgia ahead 17-3.

Mississippi State’s only points came on a field goal by Jace Christmann with 1:14 left in the first half.
MSU had a chance to score a touchdown at the end of the game after getting first-and-goal at the 2 with 20 seconds left, but running back Kylin Hill was stopped twice.
