Runners from as many as seven states will be in Vicksburg Saturday morning for the 29th annual Over the River Run hosted by the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation.

As of Thursday afternoon, more than 300 runners had registered for the race and more were continuing to register and be added to the tally, SCHF executive director Stacey Mahoney said. Those registered include runners from Mississippi, Louisiana, Missouri, Texas, North Carolina, Alabama and Colorado.

“This is one of our biggest fundraisers,” Mahoney said. “It provides money into our operating account for whatever we need, and a lot of it right now will be going to our roof match and convent work.”

The race will start Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Mississippi Welcome Center and take racers across the Old Mississippi Bridge into Delta, La. and then back along a five-mile course. There will also be a five mile race walk event and a one mile fun run, which will take place at the conclusion of the two five-mile events.

“Come to the welcome center parking lot and that’s where we have packet pickup and registration that morning,” Mahoney said. “They go onto the bridge from there. The Mississippi Track Club will be there running that part of it and starting the race and scoring the racers.”

Registration is still open for the race and costs $35 for an adult and $25 for a child 10 and under. Registration can be completed at www.southernculture.org/events/otrr.htm or from 6:30-7:30 a.m. at the welcome center on the day of the race. Mahoney said racers who are preregistered should arrive by 7:30 a.m. and parking will be available along Washington Street and in the Ameristar Casino lot.

Following the race, the band Slaphappy will be performing in the Ameristar Delta Point parking lot.

Local racers can pickup their race packets at the Southern Cultural Heritage Center Auditorium, corner of Crawford and Cherry Streets, Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
