Halloween eats and spooky treats are what the menu calls for during the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation’s two sessions of Kids in the Kitchen in October.

The first session will take place at Southern Cultural Heritage Center Monday, Oct. 23, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and is open to children from ages four to eight. The second session is Thursday, Oct. 26, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and is open to children from ages eight to 12. The events cost $35 per child and preregistration is required.

“(The Oct. 23 session) is almost full,” SCHF executive director Stacey Mahoney said. “I think we only have one spot available in that session. The second session, the Thursday night one, we have some space in.”

The classes are taught by Margie Heltzel. Previous classes have taught kids to make Christmas cookies, breakfast and more.

“They learn a lot,” Mahoney said. “What is funny is I personally will see the kids and their parents after a Kids in the Kitchen at Kroger or the grocery store somewhere shopping. The kids are so cute because they are in there and they have their list getting supplies so they can fix their families what they learned in kids in the kitchen.”

To register for the class, call the SCHF office at 601-631-2997.

“All of their supplies come with their registration fee and they will get supper as well,” Mahoney said. “We do them seasonally. I believe she (Heltzel) is going to try to schedule some for Christmas as well. Then in the spring, last year she did Easter and then we do summer and we try to do Halloween.”
