Nell Tompkins Little

Nell Tompkins Little, 86, long time resident of the Utica area, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017, at Pine Crest Guest Home in Hazlehurst. 

Nell was born in Utica on Nov. 25, 1930, to John and Lula Tompkins. She was the youngest of their 11 children. Nell attended Utica High School where she was salutatorian of her graduating class and Hinds Community College.

She was united in marriage to Herbert Joseph Little in 1948, and they made their home in Carpenter, where she resided until she moved to Utica in 2001.

Nell worked as the bookkeeper for the family business, Herbert Little Butane, and later worked as an accountant for Jimmy Boyd Accounting in Vicksburg. She was a member of Utica Baptist Church, where she was actively involved until her move to Pine Crest Guest Home. She was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed attending and watching football, basketball and the Olympics on TV.

Nell is survived by her four children and their spouses, Mickey Little Alford (Billy) of Savannah, Ga., Paula Little Kitchens of Madison, Carol Little Buchwald (Jeff) of Chattanooga, Tenn., and John Little of Pearl. “Nanny” will also be missed by her grandchildren, Andrea Alford Kent (Roderick), Amy Kitchens Whittington, Katy Tillman Wright (Chad), April Alford Platt (Keith), Joseph Tillman (Lena), Joseph Alford (Jennifer), and Erin Buchwald (V Guardado) as well as nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her devoted husband of 39 years, Herbert Little, Nell was also predeceased by a son-in-law, Alan Kitchens; her granddaughter, Stacey Kitchens; ten siblings; and her parents.

Visitation will be at Glenwood Funeral Home in Utica Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 11 a.m. followed immediately by a funeral service at noon.
