Briarfield advances to 8-Man finals

Briarfield Academy avenged one of its two losses on Friday night, and earned the right to play for the ultimate high school football prize.

Holt Martin ran for two touchdowns, as well as a pair of two-point conversions, and Briarfield beat Riverdale 22-0 in the MAIS 8-Man semifinals.

The Rebels (10-2) advanced to their first 8-Man championship game by avenging a loss to Riverdale a month ago. Briarfield will face Humphreys Academy in the championship game next Saturday at 11 a.m. at Jackson Academy.

Humphreys beat Prentiss Christian 82-42 in the other semifinal Friday night.
Briarfield had its second-lowest point total of the season, but it was enough.

Martin, the team’s quarterback, carried the ball 11 times for 93 yards and scored on runs of 4 yards in the first quarter and 1 yard in the second. Crews Fortenberry added a 20-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to ice it, and finished with 55 rushing yards.

Martin also completed 18 of 24 passes for 94 yards, and intercepted a pass on defense. Daniel Frasier caught 10 passes for 58 yards.
