The Southern Cultural Heritage Center will be having its Kids in the Kitchen seasonal cooking event Sunday starting at 2 p.m.

Kids in the Kitchen is a series of cooking classes conducted by SCHC board member and Redwood elementary teacher Margie Heltzel. The event is held along with a holiday and is nearing its second year.

“Kids in the Kitchen we have several times a year. It’s really a seasonal event,” said Stacey Mahoney executive director of the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation.

“Kids in the Kitchen is a series of cooking classes. Like during Halloween we had one and during the summer we had a baking camp where we had different themes. We do Easter as well and in 2018 we will be coming near our second year with Kids in the Kitchen. ”

Each holiday the center welcomes children in to learn how to make and create holiday related treats from Heltzel.

Each class has acquired more than 30 children and the upcoming Christmas classes are to match the number if not succeed it.

“I would say we are going to have 30-50 kids,” said Mahoney. “Kids are still signing up and classes can hold up to 24 in each one.”

In the upcoming class, children will be in the kitchen concocting Christmas goodies. Two classes will be offered and Heltzel will teach each.

The first class is the “Teddy Bear Tea” which will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. the other class, named “Christmas, Cookies, Candy and Cocoa,” will be held shortly after. Starting at 4:30 p.m. and continuing into 6:30 p.m., each class is open to ages 4 through 12.

The children in each class will be learning how to bake cookies, make sandwiches, and prepare fruit and hot cocoa. Along with cooking, students will also have the opportunity to eat and take home snacks prepared in the classroom.

Pre registration is required and parents can register children by contacting the SCHC at 601-631-2997 or emailing the organization at info@southernculture.org. Tickets are $35 and include all supplies for the event and a supper or a tea.
