Park in well-lit areas

Even though you may stop by the mall when it is daylight, the days get shorter this time of year so it is best to park as close to the building as possible or near a lamp post. Be mindful of your surroundings and have your keys to your vehicle in your hand when you are returning to your vehicle rather than fumbling around for them in your purse or pocket.

Shop with a buddy

Shopping in a group will more likely deter a would-be robber than if you are shopping alone. Plus, it is much safer walking back to your vehicle.

Secure your belongings

Don’t keep valuables in sight in your vehicle. This is a prime target of auto burglars. Put shopping bags either in your trunk or under a blanket out of sight of passersby. And always lock your vehicle.

Be careful with your wallet

Don’t carry a lot of cash or be seen holding a lot of cash. That is an easy target of robbers. Keep your wallet in your front pocket to deter a pick pocket.

If you carry a purse, keep it close to you and across your shoulder.

Online shopping dangers

If you shop online, don’t leave delivered packages unattended on your front porch. Thieves follow delivery trucks. Ask a trusted neighbor to look out for packages if you are not home.

Recycling boxes

That cardboard box laying by the curb that indicates you have a new 60-inch TV is like waving a flag for crooks.

Away on #vacay

Letting your Facebook friends know you are on that nice extended holiday vacation also lets thieves know that may be no one is at your home.
