Senior April Lynn of Warren Central High School’s softball team is moving up to the junior college ranks next year after signing with Copiah Lincoln Community College Tuesday.
“I never thought I would play at the next level honestly, but when I got that offer it was really exciting,” Lynn said.
Head coach Dana McGivney said she was proud of Lynn.
“It’s always great to see any of our players sign. We love to see them play at the next level, that’s kind of the ultimate goal,” McGivney said.
Copiah Lincoln Community College Head Coach Allen Kent was enthusiastic about Lynn coming to the team next year.
“We are excited to have April join us,” Kent said in a press release. “She’s extremely athletic and loaded with potential to really do some good things in our league. April is very versatile, able to play several positions. She’s got a good glove and solid arm. She’s strong and generates a lot of bat-head speed. We’re looking for her to be able to come in and contribute immediately.”
Lynn was thrilled at the prospect of making an early impact with the Wolves.
“It’s amazing,” Lynn said. “You would never think that someone else would say that about you. You would only think your coach in high school would say it, but when someone from college says it, it’s thrilling.”
Last year, Lynn played multiple positions for the Vikings, batting .154 with eight RBIs and an on-base percentage of .312. She was quick to thank a few people for helping her throughout her career.
“I have to thank coach Mac. She’s been there a lot for me. And my parents. They’ve coached me since I was really young,” Lynn said.
“She has put in a lot of work and gotten a lot better,” McGivney said. “I’ve had her since seventh grade, so definitely a big change in six years. I’ve seen it for the last two or three years that she definitely had the potential to play at the next level.”
Lynn said she was ready for the challenge of playing at the junior college level.
“It’s just going to be different, a lot harder, more action,” Lynn said.
For now, Lynn’s focus remains on the Warren Central team for her senior year. The first game of the season comes at Florence on March 1.
