Bundled up in hats and coats, the cast of “The Cocktail Hour” worked through their final rehearsal Wednesday afternoon before opening night Friday.

Jim Biedenbach, Reba Causey, Linda Hadala and Jacks Burns will star in “The Cocktail Hour” Friday and Saturday at The Strand Theater. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. both nights. Tickets are $10 in advance at Highway 61 Coffeehouse on Washington Street or $15 at the door.

“’The Cocktail Hour’ is a family drama where two middle aged kids go to visit their parents as the parents are getting on in life,” Burns, who is also directing the show, said. “The son has written a play about the family and all the family dirt starts coming out and there is tension, conflict and ultimately resolution.”

The play was written by A.R. Gurney and first performed in California in 1988. It is set in the 1970s and takes place during an evening of drinking between the parents and their two children in their upper-class home.

The cocktail hour in the play continues to extend due to issues with dinner and as time goes on and more drinks are consumed, arguments start amongst the family.

“It is not suitable for kids and the people need to dress warmly,” Burns said.

The cast has been working on the play for an extended period of time as it had to be rescheduled.

“It is blood, sweat and tears,” Burns said of the preparation. “It is a lot of work. We have been rehearsing on and off for quite some time, because this show was postponed from last fall. Other projects and things intervened.”
