NWS confirms 2 tornadoes in area

The National Weather Service in Jackson has confirmed that two tornadoes touched down locally during Monday night’s storm.

The first touched down at 6:07 p.m. near Bear Lake Road East in Tallulah, Louisiana and stayed on the ground until 6:11 p.m.

The tornado was deemed an EF1 with estimated peak winds of 95 mph. The tornado traveled for 1.78 miles and had a maximum width of 120 yards according to a NWS release.

NWS meteorologist Shannon Hefferan said they determine the strength of the tornado by traveling to the site and looking at the damage caused.

In Tallulah, the tornado moved mostly across an open field according to the NWS, but uprooted some trees and leveled a metal tractor barn throwing debris. An old home was also damaged by the tornado, a flatbed trailer was rolledover and a small wooden shed was pushed over.

The NWS also confirmed an EF0 tornado touched down along Fox Road in Warren County at 7:11 p.m. The tornado had an estimated maximum wind speed of 70 mph and traveled for two miles crossing Flower Hills Road, according to the NWS. The tornado had a maximum width of 50 yards and uprooted a few trees and broke a few large tree branches, but no damage to structures was reported.

The tornado was only on the ground briefly dissipating at 7:12 p.m.
