Malcolm Butler is about to go from a forgotten man in New England to a well-paid one in Nashville.

Butler’s agent Derek Simpson told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the Vicksburg native intends to sign a five-year, $60 million contract with the Tennessee Titans when the NFL’s free agency period opens Wednesday afternoon.

ESPN and the AP reported that $30 million of the contract is guaranteed. The Nashville Tennessean reported that Butler will receive a $10 million signing bonus.

Butler would be Tennessee’s highest-paid player. The $12 million per year average for his contract with the Titans ranks 10th among NFL cornerbacks, according to spotrac.com.

Butler has 209 tackles and eight interceptions in 59 career games.

The 28-year-old signed with New England in 2014 as an undrafted free agent from West Alabama and has spent his entire career with the team. He had the game-clinching interception in the final minute of Super Bowl XLIX and won another ring with the Patriots two years later.

He was a restricted free agent last offseason and was courted by the New Orleans Saints. They never signed him to an offer sheet, and he returned to the Patriots on a one-year tender worth $3.91 million.
Butler played 97.8 percent of the Patriots’ defensive snaps from 2015-17, but was benched for Super Bowl LII against Philadelphia. He played only one special teams snap as the Patriots lost 41-33 to the Eagles.
