Ole Miss rolls to ninth win in a row

ATLANTA — Ole Miss is rolling like a runaway 18-wheeler heading into the start of the Southeastern Conference baseball season.
Cole Zabowski hit a three-run home run and finished 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, Chase Cockrell doubled in three runs and scored twice, and the Rebels crushed Georgia State 16-2 Wednesday afternoon to sweep a two-game midweek series in Atlanta.
Ole Miss (17-1) won its ninth consecutive game heading into its SEC opener against Tennessee Friday night at Swayze Field.
Ole Miss finished with 14 hits in the game, and 10 different players scored at least one run. Grae Kessinger, Ryan Olenek, Nick Fortes, Tim Elko, Cockrell and Zabowksi scored twice each.
Olenek had three hits. Elko was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, and Thomas Dillard also drove in a pair of runs. The 16 runs were a season high for the Rebels.
Cockrell hit a bases-clearing double in the top of the first inning as the Rebels raced out to a 4-0 lead. In the third, Zabowski hit a three-run home run to make it 7-0.
Ole Miss padded its lead with a single run in the fourth inning, two in the sixth and eighth, and four in the seventh.
Starting pitcher Jordan Fowler (3-0) allowed one hit and one walk in five scoreless innings. He struck out three before giving way to the bullpen.
Tanner Gallman hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to plate both of Georgia State’s runs.
Georgia State (11-6) had won seven of its previous eight games before running into Ole Miss.
