Teen charged with credit card fraud using stolen phone

A 16-year-old juvenile is being held in the Warren County Youth Detention Center charged with credit card fraud involving $2,000 in purchases he reportedly made from eBay using an app on a stolen cell phone, Warren County Martin Pace said.

The teen’s name was not released because of his age.

Pace said deputies received a call March 19 about a stolen cell phone. During the investigation, investigator Jason Bailess learned when the 16-year-old got the phone, it was unlocked and had an open app for the victim’s eBay account.

The teen used the account to purchase jewelry, three iPhones and a motorized mini bike, and had the items delivered to different relatives’ homes. The teen was arrested, and all the already delivered merchandise was recovered. Pace said some of the purchased items had not been delivered.

“The lesson in this is if you have an eBay account, or a credit card account, or any account to make online purchases, take it off your cell phone,” Pace said. “When this young man got the phone, he was able to get to an open online account and use that account to make purchases.”
