BOCA RATON, Fla. — Southern Miss bounced back nicely after dropping its series opener against Florida Atlantic.

The Golden Eagles banged out 15 hits, including five doubles and a grand slam by Matt Wallner, as they crushed Florida Atlantic 14-3 on Sunday.

Southern Miss (17-5, 4-1 Conference USA) won the last two games of the series after Florida Atlantic (17-7, 3-3) took the opener by scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth.

“We were pitching from behind all day and they made us pay,” Florida Atlantic coach John McCormack said. “They were locked in and ready to go. It all starts on the mound, and I don’t think we did a good job.”

Southern Miss hit into double plays in each of the first two innings, and then was pretty much unstoppable after that.

Mason Irby and LeeMarcus Boyd hit back-to-back doubles in the third to put the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0. A walk and a single by Luke Reynolds loaded the bases, and then Wallner went deep over the right field wall for a grand slam to push it to 5-0.

It was Wallner’s fifth home run of the season. He finished the game 2-for-3 with five RBIs and two runs scored.

Southern Miss added another run in the fifth, three in the sixth, and then five in the eighth and ninth innings.

Gabe Montenegro went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, Casey Maack and Cole Donaldson each drove in two runs, and Boyd was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored.

On the mound, Walker Powell (2-1) kept Florida Atlantic in check for 7 1/3 inniings. He allowed nine hits and three runs, but didn’t walk a batter and struck out seven. It was the longest outing of the sophomore’s career, and his strikeout total was also a career best. He only allowed one run through the first seven innings.

Mason Strickland closed things out with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

“(Powell) really stepped up big for us in a big series on the road this weekend,” Southern Miss coach Scott Berry said.
