St. Al storms past Riverfield

Adrienne Eckstein confessed to being a little bit nervous before Wednesday’s match against Riverfield Academy. St. Aloysius honored her and fellow seniors Ryan Jarratt and Anne Stewart Piazza beforehand, which upped the pressure a bit.

“I was kind of worried. I was like, ‘What if I lose?’ It was a little bit of pressure. I didn’t really know what was happening,” Eckstein laughed.

Turns out she had nothing to worry about. Eckstein, as well as Piazza and Jarratt, all turned in solid performances and cruised to straight set victories as the Flashes rolled over Riverfield 8-1 on a windy afternoon at Halls Ferry Park.

Eckstein beat Ericka Cherene 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 girls singles.

“We had played them last year, so it was similar. I was probably a little more experienced. It was pretty easy, but I hit well,” Eckstein said.

Piazza and her sister Elise blanked Maddie Albritton and Maddie Claire Gilmore 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 girls doubles. Jarratt and Parker Brown struggled a bit in the first set of their No. 2 boys doubles match against Cameron Williams and Spencer Caston before prevailing 6-4, 6-2.

Jarratt and Brown won three of the last four games in the first set after Williams and Caston had taken a break point to tie it at 3-all.

“The first set definitely wasn’t as good. It took us a little bit longer to get more in the zone and in the feel of the match,” Jarratt said.

In other matches, Miles Harris and Adam Eckstein beat Riverfield’s Kaiden Krishna and Jake Worsley 6-1, 6-4 in No. 1 boys doubles; Ashley Jarratt and Taylor Chewning defeated Sarah Krishna and Bonnie Cooper 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 girls doubles; and Natalie Jones knocked off Lillia Cumpton 6-0, 6-1 in No. 2 girls singles.

St. Al’s Chris Albert beat Thomas Rawls 6-3, 6-0 in No. 1 boys singles. while Carson Collier and Logan Young defeated Riverfield’s Marissa Corckett and Alex Durbin 6-3, 6-3 in mixed doubles.

Riverfield won the No. 2 boys singles point, as Kaleb Clark beat Ethan Naron 6-1, 6-1.
