The partnership involved with the development of a proposed waterpark for Vicksburg is expected to release a report on the project’s status sometime this week, South Ward Alderman Alex Monsour said.
“They are moving forward to submit a tourism tax credit application for the site in Vicksburg to the Mississippi Development Authority sometime this week,” Monsour, who has been working with the investors on the project, said. “They will also meet to discuss the next step for the project.”
Monsour did not have any information about the location of the park, which was initially planned to be built on South Frontage Road.
Plans for the proposed $12.95 million Blues Beach Family Waterpark to be built on property off South Frontage Road were announced in 2016.
According to information on the project presented to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen at the time by contractor Innovative Leisure Partners, the park was expected to create 12 full-time and 300 part-time jobs and earn more than $1.4 million a year.
It was expected to attract 1.4 million visitors over 10 years with a projected total economic impact for the city of $1.195 billion by 2025, with a direct spending impact of $102.6 million over the same period.
The park’s location adjacent to the Outlets at Vicksburg was selected based on a $20 million Mississippi Department of Transportation project to link the east and west ends of South Frontage Road by building an overpass crossing the Kansas City Southern Railroad tracks that split the road.
Construction was to begin in 2017, but delays in the South Frontage Road expansion project involving the relocation of city water, gas and sewer lines put work on the waterpark project on hold.
