“Tier 1 are the lowest entry fees that a park charges,” he said. “All the Tier 1 parks across the nation are going up.”

Under the new entrance fee schedule, the charge per vehicle goes up $5, from $15 to $20. Other charges include $10 per person walking into the park, up from $7; an increase of $5 from $10 to $15 per motorcycle; and the annual park pass increases from $30 to $35.

“All the entry fees we collect stay here at Vicksburg,” Babinowich said, adding the fees go to help pay for deferred maintenance projects.

“These fees are so specific, that’s it’s not just deferred maintenance, it’s deferred maintenance that impacts the visitor experience, so it has be projects which the visitor can interact with in a positive way — new exhibits, new restrooms, anything that’s in the visitor realm is what these fees are used for.”

According to information from the National Park Service, more than 1.5 billion people have visited the national parks in the last five years. The effect of the increased visitor traffic has put a strain on park infrastructure and facilities have led to an $11.6 billion deferred maintenance backlog nationwide.
